How to dress for a job interview?

Most candidates who stand for a new selection process are concerned about how to dress for a job interview, they don’t know what to wear and that’s where the nerves begin to attack.

This is not something unusual, since going to a first interview with inadequate hair, makeup or clothes could ruin your chances of landing your dream job.

Luckily, while different jobs may require different clothing, there are basic dress standards that can be applied to leave a good impression in any interview.

Basic rules

When you are going to choose the clothes to wear to your job interview, it is always good to take your time and pay attention to all the details. What is recommended in these cases is to follow the general rule of wearing discreet clothes and leave aside anything that will take away the attention from your capabilities and professional performance.

Whether you are a man or a woman, one of the main rules is to show up to the interview clean, with spotless nails, well-groomed or with a well-maintained beard, with clean and combed hair, and if you use a perfume, have a mild aroma. Clothing and accessories (watch, rings, bracelets, earrings, bag…), must be discreet, avoiding any excess.

The clothing that is used to attend an interview should be comfortable and fit well. It should not be too big nor too small…it should be fitted according to the body of the person who wears it, and the shoes should be comfortable as well. For women the heels should be high enough not to make them feel insecure.

All garments must be well pressed, without stains or tears.  The image to be projected must always be a discreet and neat one, so torn or worn garments should not be worn, even if they are designed that way.

Regardless of whether it is a formal or informal company, bet on a professional and classic image, leave aside the stridency that comes with colors that are too bright.

Copy the style of other people in the company who occupy the same or similar position as the one you are aiming for, without neglecting your own style, but moderating it if you are characterized by taking it to the limit.

No one wants the interviewer to notice that someone has unhealthy habits, or to be distracted by looking at clothing, hairstyles, or accessories.  What candidates want the interviewer to remember is the demonstrated ability to perform the tasks related to employment. No one wants to be remembered by the interviewer because of the eccentric or disorganized way in which they showed up.

A job interview is ultimately a way to sell the professional skills of a human being. The person is the product and the image that is projected is part of the package, so you have to show that you are a clean, tidy person and that you belong in that company. If doubt still invades your senses, remember that you can also investigate the dress policy of the company you will attend for an interview prior to the interview day.
