Guava Pastries
Guava “pastelillos” are a very easy Puerto Rican delicacy to make. They are made of puff pastry filled with guava paste. They are the life of any party! They are available in bakeries in Puerto Rico and here I show you how to make them.
Ingredients:
- 1 sheet of puff pastry that you can get it in the frozen items area of the supermarket of your choice.
- 1 block of guava paste, or a guava sleeve already prepared
- Powder sugar
- Flour
Process:
- In order to work the dough, it needs to be at room temperature so let it thaw before you start handling it.
- Dust the surface where you are going to work with the flour so that the dough does not stick.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees (remember every oven is different).
- Cut the puff pastry into squares (you can use a pizza cutter) if they are minis, they can be 2 x 2 inches, you can use a cookie cutter in the shape of a square or you can make them as big or as little as you please.
- Stretch the dough a little, not too much so it can rise enough for delicious layers of crispy puff pastry.
- Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Meanwhile, you can melt the guava in a saucepan with about 2 tablespoons of water (or you can get a ready-made sleeve at pastry shops).
- Once our pastries are ready, let them cool completely and fill them with the guava.
- Once stuffed, sprinkle powdered sugar on top and… enjoy!
